BBC School Report What Is News?

In 1973 Blumer and Katz developed 'The uses and Gratification Theory arguing audiences costume media text for one or more of the four reasons .

  • Information
  • Entertainment
  • Socialisation
  • Surveillance

News= Facts/ Information

Because the 'news' you see on TV, online and in the newspaper is also a product that has to sell to a target audience it can also be entertaining this may distract from facts.

Fake News: Sources that intentionally fabricate information, disseminate deceptive content, or grossly distort actual news reports.

An example of this is is Black lives matter thug protests President Trump with selfie then accidentally shoots himself in the face.
Flat earth society proves the earth is flat.

The way to spot fake news:
  • See if the post is believable.
  • Look for any signs of photoshop
  • See if the pictures have been used before.
